Transferring Courses for the MS-CS, MAS-AI, MAS-CS, and MAS-CYBS

Computer Science Department

Illinois Institute of Technology

Introduction

With department approval, students in the MS-CS and MCS programs can transfer credit for CS courses taken as a non-degree student, CS-related courses transferred from other departments at Illinois Tech, and CS courses transferred from other universities..

Limitations

Only courses applicable to degree requirements can be transferred for credit and no course can have been used toward another degree. Each course must have been passed with a grade of "B" or better. Combining all sources in the sections below, a grand total maximum of 9 credit hours of courses may be transferred.

With department approval, courses that cannot be transferred for credit may be used to meet prerequisite requirements for other courses.

CS Courses from Illinois Tech

Courses taken from the CS department before starting the Master's program (typically as a Non-Degree Special Graduate Student) may be transferred to the degree program. Note: CS 200, 201, 401, 402, and 403 cannot be transferred.

Graduate CS Courses from Other Universities

Graduate CS courses taken at other colleges or universities may be transferred to the degree program. (Non-CS courses cannot be transferred.) Course transfers must be explicitly approved by the CS department: Approval is given on a case-by-case basis, and there is no guarantee that a course will be given transfer credit.

Each course to be transferred:

For transferring CS coursework from other universities, there is a credit hour limit of 6 hours depending on whether the student has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (6 hours) or not in Computer Science (3 hours). In either case, the grand total maximum of 9 credit hours transferred still applies.

Course transfers must be explicitly approved by the CS department. Department approval is given on a case-by-case basis, and there is no guarantee that a course will be given transfer credit.

CS-Related Graduate Courses From Other Illinois Tech Departments

CS-related courses in other departments at Illinois Tech can be transferred to the degree program, but only if they appear in the list of approved courses below. The courses can be taken as a Computer Science student, or they may have been taken before starting the degree program.

For transferring non-CS coursework from other IIT departments, there is a credit hour limit of 6 hours depending on whether the student has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (6 hours) or not in Computer Science (3 hours). In either case, the grand total maximum of 9 credit hours transferred still applies.

Note: The courses below do not count as 500-level CS courses for purposes of the MSCS and MCS coursework requirements.
